After visiting Bayon in the Angkor Thom complex we drove the 35 minuets to one of the Angkor temples that was built not by the ruler, but by the religious group and was dedicated to ladies – Banteay Srei temple. The carvings in the pink sandstone are truly amazing, despite it having been built in the 900’s AD.
After leaving Banteay Srei temple, we returned to Siem Reap for one of the best meals we have had in Cambodia.
After lunch those of us who wanted to were dropped in the center of town to do some shopping and look around after which we took a tuc-tuc (motorcycle rickshaw) back to the hotel for a nice swim and (yuck) packing for the trip home.
This evening we went to dinner theatre Cambodian style. As you enter had room you remove shoes and the tables are floor height with spaces underneath to put your legs and no backs. The 6 course meal was served to each individual on a tray with all courses. As we were finishing the meal, the theater show started and consisted of some 7-8 acts – music but no language – folkloric type ballet with the players extending their hands backwards to an extreme and making shapes with their hands while telling s story in dance. Very interesting, long and the food was average, but still, a fun evening.
Tomorrow we all fly back to Kuala Lumpur for an 8 hour stay in the airport before flying back to England.
So ends the holiday and the posting. However, I am missing the 18th Feb – Angkor Wat and the lake with the floating village so will do that one.
