732 BC Naxus founded by the Greeks. Taormina founded in mid 500’s BC (Monte Tauro). DH Lawrence, Goethe etc all were in Tormina and wrote about Taormina.
After a short drive around the bay of Giardini-Naxos, which was gorgeous we drove up the hill to Taormina. Shopping at the bus stop we Walked Into Town through the arch and a long visit in the amphitheater. It dates to the 3rd century BC when the Greeks started the work and then it was greatly expanded during the subsequent centuries until it became what it is now. Still used for concerts it is vast with amazing acoustics – The largest that still exists.
We then went to an amazing hotel (Gran Hotel Timeo) for a lemonade with a gorgeous view. A 5 Star, elegant hotel. Some ceramic shopping while there was a torrential rain storm and then a sandwich at the cafe on the square.
A wander back to the bus and return to the hotel for swim in the spa, drinks and dinner.
