2019-06-24 to 26 – In Bermuda & Return

Monday June 24, 2019 – After breakfast at the hotel, we headed to the Bank for morning meetings and Lunch with the Bank manager at Bolero Brasserie restaurant on the waterfront. We returned to the hotel after wandering through the shops and town.

Tuesday June 25, 2019 – Today was a free day so we got back onto the motorbikes and travelled around the other side of the island near the airport. We headed up the South coast road North West and soon found the Crystal caves we had heard about. They are spectacular. One travels down steps to Fantasy and Crystal caves, with high vaulted ceilings and walks on pontoons over the 50 ft deep water marveling at the spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. They were discovered in 1907 by accident, when children playing cricket nearby, accidently hit the ball and it disappeared into the ground. One of the two children (Carl Gibbons and Edgar Hollis) went after the ball (which had fallen some 150 feet into the earth and has never been found) thus finding for the first time these amazing caves. They are located at 8 Crystal Cave Road, just off Wilkinson Avenue between Hamilton and St. Georges. – (+441-293-0640 – caves.bm/crystalcave.html). The Wilkinson family, owners of the property since 1884, soon set about getting better access and develop the place for tourists to visit.

We then proceeded past the golf courses to St Georges Town. A charming town where we visited the local sites and picked one of the seafood restaurants on the waterside for an exquisite lunch. We next proceeded over The Causeway (a man-built causeway between the island where the Airport is located and the rest of Bermuda), past the airport to the furthest North point – Fort St. Catherine’s and the lighthouse. Thus, we visited from one point at St. Catherine to the other end – The Royal Naval Dockyard covering some 130 miles on the motorbikes.
