The first talk of the day was on Puerto Madryn Port lecture with Ruth.
Next came Simon Weston CBE – “My Life, My Words, My Story” – Wounded from a bomb that killed most of his fellow soldiers in the Falkland war, tells his moving story of “coming back from the dead” and his 96 operations and a total of 6 years in hospitals, with not only the physical but the psychological aspects of his “return to life”.
Spies, Lies, Double Agents and the ‘Real’ James Bond by Michael Kushner was the next talk. While the Germans sent spies into England disguised as refugees or by boat or parachute, the British with their code breaking capabilities developed at Bletchley Park, made it possible to pick up all of these spies. Some were incarcerated, but others were turned into “double-agents”.
Fabio Zini – Guitarist was the evening entertainment, he was excellent.
Wednesday, February 12, 2020 –
At sea on route to Montevideo, Uruguay.
We missed the Ushuaia port lecture so the first session for us was Simon Weston, the wounded soldier from the Falkland islands that was awarded the CBE. He was interviewed by the entertainment director Neil Kelly. During the interview, he as not only asked questions about his 6 years hospitalization/ 94 operations but Also more personal questions about his marriage and children. Additionally, questions from the audience were very telling and it was interesting how he answered each of them in a very straightforward honest manner.
Michael Kushner gave his final talk on the Battle of the River Plate. The Germans in 1939 were ordered to sink as many British merchant ships in the South Atlantic so as to cut off Britain’s supply lines.
We decided to skip the evening entertainment “Dance Passion” with the Cunard singers and dancers, mainly because the singers were at best poor, VT the dancers were good, in favor of an early night.
