2020-02-23 – At Sea on route to Punta Arenas, Chile

Saturday, February 22, 2020 – At sea traveling out of the Beagle Channel towards the Atlantic, North in the Atlantic and then Entering the Magellan Straights to Punta Arenas, Chile. A good day at sea, viewing a lot of sea life including dolphins, whales and lots of birds. We did go to the lecture by Dr. Robert Wilder on creating the first clean Energy Mutual fund and being in an eco-entrepreneur. He was a university professor and became an eco-entrepreneur opening and running successful companies that are favorable to the ecology.

The next lecture was the Governor of the bank of England Lord King of Lothbury who spoke about the world in turbulent times. A very interesting speaker as he had been the head of the Bank of England from 2003 to 2013 and told us stories, not only of the economy, but of various encounters with the Queen at social parties. One particularly interesting story was when a visiting head of state at a formal dinner at Windsor Castle. All the guests had been filing in, taking their particular places per the name tags on the settings. The Queen, based on the music was about to enter the room, when the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who was always late, came rushing in to the room and went straight past his place to find where he was supposed to be sitting. At which point the Queen was already at her seat and as is the protocol the Queen and the visiting head of state give short speeches before the dinner is served. However the Queen’s first comment was “it appears that we have lost the Prime Minister”, as his seat was empty and he was standing somewhere in the middle of the room.

The third lecture on native populations of Patagonia and Tierra Del Fuego we missed, but did go to the one by Anthony Brandreth on “whales dolphins and wildlife”. He was one of the two lecturers that were always on the deck area in front of the gym on the ninth floor at the bow pointing out maritime wildlife as we were sailing. Fascinating and they were both very kind to the uninitiated.

Good evening we enjoyed as usual the sensational Mike Doyle the comedian and singer who is always very amusing and who he had come to know on prior trips on Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.
