2023-01-06 – Atlantic Ocean – New York to Southampton – Day 4

Friday January 6, 2023

Happy 3 Kings day. Despite leaving our boots a the end of the bed, we found that the 3 Kings don’t deliver in the choppy mid-Atlantic!!!

There was no change in hour today, but there was a change in schedule. There were no morning lectures as there was an all staff exercise simulating a fire on B2 – the plumber’s shop. All went to muster stations as if there was a full evacuation of the ship. Interesting to watch! During the exercise we observed part of the outside railing come off, not a good place to be if you had one too many in the Pub – a long swim!!!

We were greatly amused, instructed and entertained by The Royal Butler – Grant Harrold, who gave a detailed etiquette talk in the Queen’s Room, where tea is served and is the room where the biggest dance floor at sea is present. The explanation of how to greet royalty, walk to the afternoon tea table and have tea with the King (milk after tea – as old cups were likely to crack with the cold milk followed by hot tea, no pinky up etc.) was demonstrated with 4 volunteers. He talked about certain Buckingham Palace receives that he promised to share with us tomorrow (and did).

This was followed by a lecture on how London (principally architecture) has changed from the early Victorian times to the present.

The ship started really “rocking and rolling”. Not so much with high seas, but more the swells with the bow pitching some 20-25 degrees! So Roger retired to the cabin and Anne was off to the Gym.

We partook of the usual good dinner, followed by Symphony, a show with the on-board 4 (2 couples) singers, all three orchestras as well as a pre-recorded video / audio background, 60 piece orchestra in the Albert Hall in London. A brilliant synchronization giving the appearance of the 80 piece orchestra right in front of you on the stage.
