2023-01-21 – Heraklion, Crete to Suez Canal – Day 18

Saturday January 21, 2023

Another day at sea going very slowly towards Port Said. We arrived at the anchor point just outside the Suez Canal a bit after 5PM. We will stay here until we enter the Suez Canal at 4AM tomorrow.

Lucy Russell spoke about Aida and the fact that Verdi was commissioned to write an Opera for the opening of the Suez Canal in the late 1800’s. However, it was not done until 2 years after for the opening of the Cairo Opera House and actually Rigolleto played for the first couple of months before all was assembled for Aida in November.

We had a nice lunch at the Verandah restaurant where the Raspberry Pavlova (Merengue) is always a particular favorite to go with the pepper steak.

The evening performance was the spectacular acrobatic duo, we had seen before, but always impressive – Duo Lydoji. An early night to be up for the Canal early tomorrow.
