Sunday January 29, 2023
An enjoyable Sunday with relatively calm seas and we are now definitely into the regular routine of daily life aboard the ship. First we attended a full traditional Church Service by the Captain where he talked and read the poem on “The Heavenly Supermarket”. Anne had been to her Catholic Service earlier. The lectures were interesting – Andrew Cooper the Naturalist, BBC Presenter, talked about Gerald Durrell, who wrote many books having sold many millions in 40 different languages. Andrew was a good friend and admirer and produced the tribute to Gerald Durrell for the BBC following his death. Born in India, grew up in Corfu and then back in England due to the war, he always had a tremendous love of nature, the animals therein and the continuation of the specials through a change in the model of what zoos are all about. From caged animals for the public to see to a true zoological effort of preservation and continuation of the species of all animals however small. His zoo in Jersey Islands is still perusing his philosophy.
Sibelius Laing took us into what it was like to be the Ambassador’s wife “inside the Embassy” in their various postings – Oman, Kuwait, Borneo, and others mostly in the Arab world. An interesting insight.
We had time for games, blog posting and got all dressed up for the evening activities including the Cunard Singers and Dancers performing the (exhausting) “Rhythm of the Night”. A festival of Latin Music from Samba to Salsa to Paso Doble to Tango and back again.
