2023-03-15 – Melbourne to Kangaroo Island, Australia – Day 71

Wednesday March 15, 2023

The morning saw an exercise for the crew, so the first lecture was not until 11:15 and it was “The Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin’s Manager and Producer – John Stainton giving more behind the scenes activities with his life with Steve. Two unfortunate incidents, one when he was holding his 1 month old son in one arm while feeding a crocodile with the other, was shown worldwide and nearly killed his career. The other was him holding on to and “riding” an iceberg while filming a sequence close to two whales was picked up by a woman on a passing ship who thought it was Steve riding a whale and a big scandal ensued. Although, they had footage of him on the iceberg, the damage was done. However he was able to get back some of his credibility and fame before being killed by a stingray on the Great Barrier Reef. A tragic end to a person who did so much to educate people about snakes, crocodiles and other animals in the wild. The next talk was by Chris Frame, a Cunard Historian talking about the long history of Cunard vessels and the companies it acquired.

The afternoon was taken up with some needed activities back in the “real world of home”. We did go to the evening show – another excellent Australian singer with good stage presence – Belinda Adams.
