Another day at sea, which is always welcome between ports. The first Lecture by Kate Schroeder – Forensic Medicine expert gave a very interesting talk about food and cooking as it evolved over 1.5 million years. The type of food from raw to cooked and meat to vegetables is shown through natural selection mainly in the shape of the mouth and dental, jaw and skull records. These adapt to the type of food being consumed.
The second Lecture was actually an interview Neil Kelly did of Riaan Manser and his wife “fusty” on his life and what’s next. They were both charming and exciting and spoke of the difficult adventure that was rowing from Africa to New York and from the Pacific USA coast to Hawaii. How at times they had fun, while at other times the were at each other’s throats, but as they had “nowhere to run” they worked out their differences and have a nice family with two boys. They have just purchased a sailing boat and are in the process of selling their home in Cape Town and plan on sailing around the world with their young (ages 2 & 6) children. We happened to sit next to them over lunch so had a chance to chat with them over lunch. A very nice, “down to earth” couple.

In the afternoon, a choir made up of passengers had been practicing under the guidance of two of the Cunard singers, gave a performance of some 5 songs and were very professional. It was great to see them.

After dressing for the Gala evening, we attended the Captain’s Cocktail Party and was surprised to find out that it was to introduce the celebrity on board – Sir Bob Geldorf (Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof) who then took the microphone. A real treat to see and hear from a person who has accomplished so much in is life. He will be interviewed by Neil Kelly in a couple of days. Born 1951, Irish singer songwriter and political activist. Lead Singer of Irish Rock Band the Boomtown Rats. He gained world fame for organizing supergroup Band Aid and concerts Live Aid and Live 8. His Activism led to helping to stamp out world hunger and injustice, particularly in Ethiopia. The show was “Apassionata” with the Cunard singers and dancers and as we have seen it several times, even though an excellent show, we skipped it.
