2024-05-22 – La Coruña, Spain – Day 020

Wednesday May 22, 2024 – La Coruña, Spain

As this was our second time in La Coruña of 3 on this trip, we opted not to do any tours and just take our time and wander around the town, getting to know both the old town as well as the restaurant and shopping areas. As the town is next to the docks, we were able to be there rapidly. However, it was pouring with rain so within a while we were soaked. We tried to seek refuge from the rain at the Church of St. James (Santiago), but it was closed. So we stood under the trees in one of the parks and eventually tracked the Church of Saint Mary (Santa Maria), which we enjoyed wandering around, albeit fairly austere. We then found the Church of Saint Dominique (Santo Domingo) where an old priest was preparing to say mass in one of the side chapels. He moved very slowly, but said that he was saying mass in an hour. By this time the rain had subsided, so we wandered around the area and got back in plenty of time for mass and joined with the other 5 people for the service.

It is a beautiful old town and the areas to visit are all walkable from the ship dock. We went into a religious art museum (near the Santa Maria Church), which is small but contains some outstanding pieces, the architecture of some of the buildings, parks and alleyways were well worth the wander. In particular the “main square – Plaza de María Pita” where the Municipal Town hall is located with many outdoor restaurants in the square, is well worth a visit. We eventually found our way to the area where there are perhaps 100 restaurants and settled on one, where we enjoyed Cigala (like shrimp) croquettes and other such tapas, watching the world go by and by this time we were in glorious sunshine. We then meandered back to the ship and enjoyed the show with E. Sarah Carter and her music.
