2024-05-27 – At Sea on route to Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland – Day 025

Monday May 27, 2024 – At Sea to Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland

We missed the Beefeater / Chief Warden of the Tower of London as well as the port presentation although we did get there in plenty of time to get seats for the interview with Midge Ure by the Entertainment Director Michael Harvey. A lot of very interesting discussion about his early days and life as well as his later fame and fortune. We all were impressed by his story, and assume he is a major star, but we had never really heard his name let alone his music and illustrious career, even though he is our age. It was very interesting information to learn.

We stayed for the Emma Neave-Webb lecture about the Killer Whale or Orca and their sightings in the Scottish waters. Each one is identified and given a number as well as each pod (family unit) given a number (usually that of the dominant female). She went into the language and the effects of PCB’s on the population, ending the presentation with a recovery of a beached whale that she participated in which successfully took the whale back to it’s marine habitat.

The Captain’s noon day announcement indicated that we have travelled 173 knots since leaving Queensferry at an average speed of 7 knots, leaving 190 knots to reach Kirkwall, Scotland.

We were all very excited by the idea of the evening show as Midge Ure was to perform his music, so we rushed through dinner to get a good seat and by the time the show started there was standing room only. While it was a nice concert, we did not know any of the songs although many of the audience knew every word and sang along. A good education of the 70 year old that is a legend in the industry, at least in the UK.
