Sunday June 16, 2024 – At Sea, on Route between Alhegro, Sardinia, Italy and Palma de Mallorca, Spain
We were happy to have a day at sea after two, back to back, busy days in Italy. We attended the Captain David Hudson’s Church Service, followed by Philip Price’s talk on “Sea creatures you do not want to meet”. He went through a series of animals that live in the sea that can inject such venom into a human that you would have minutes to at most an hour to live without receiving the anti-venom remedy. These include – The Beaked Sea Snake (in two varieties – Asian and Australian), similar but more venomous than the Cobra or Rattlesnake; the Cone Snail (which looks attractive to pick up as you stroll along the beach but can deliver enough poison in one bite to kill 9 people); the Blue Ringed Octopus (it’s skin has iridescent blue rings which when lit, warn – don’t touch me – as if one does, you die in 10 minutes); the Box Jellyfish (very long tentacles); the Portuguese Man of War; the Irukandji Jellyfish (very small – fits in a test-tube but lethal); the Stone Fish (looks like a stone, but with a large powerful, crocodile-like jaw and stingers all over the surface that inject poison); the Bobbit Worm; the Puffer Fish (a food, delicacy in the East, but venomous, if not prepared properly kills you); the Great Salt Water Crocodile; and finally, the Humboldt Squid. It certainly makes you not want to enter the water, particularly around Australia!
It being our Wedding Anniversary, and Sunday, we decided to have lunch at the Steak-house Sir Samuel’s. After a leisurely afternoon, we got dressed for dinner and then went to Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of) show. This was the third time it was on during this cruise. The first time it was put off due to illness of one of the five actors; the second time, the play-write had to substitute for a different ill actor, which we saw and was good and so tonight with the full cast, it was slow and at best average, with many people walking out of the theatre in drips and drabs, starting after about 30 minutes into the show. Sad, but it needs to be improved, if it is to last.
