2023-01-08 – Atlantic Ocean – New York to Southampton – Day 5

Sunday January 8, 2023

Overnight the ship was really moving with the “Angry Atlantic” really showed it’s true form. Anne was buffered about and awake for a few hours. Roger managed to sleep through it, but all day it has been really moving around.

We ended up having a quiet day with no lectures. After breakfast was the Maritime church service presided over by the Captain. An interesting sermon about the preacher on the Titanic who was preaching and saving souls even as he was dying of hypothermia and putting his young daughter (whose mother died in childbirth) and her cousin who were traveling with him as he was headed for a temporary preaching assignment in Chicago. Upon arrival in New York, the young girls having been saved by the Carpathian opted to return home to England and live out their lives with family. Lessons learned are never to leave anything important, such as religion, to the last moment.

After the quick hour change where noon became 1 PM, we had a nice lunch at the alternate fancy steakhouse – The Verandah and then tried to get some internet stuff going with limited success. Including a semi successful family zoom.

After dinner in the Britannia, once agin the amazing opera singers from Chester Emily & Sophie – The “Belle Voci” put on a spectacular performance. They have truly magnificent voices and were recounting tales of their experiences such as singing the National Anthem before the FA cup final, when the mistakenly turned off all the lights and air conditioning, before the start of the game in their Manchester United dressing room!.
