2023-01-09 – Atlantic Ocean – New York to Southampton – Day 6

  • When we got to our cabin last night, we were greeted with two boxes and a video playing on how to do a COVID test. We, together with all the rest of the passengers on the ship were required to perform a COVID test between 8 and 9 AM, this morning and hand the result to the Cabin Steward. There has been no evidence or talk that there was an outbreak on the ship so we can only assume that it is a requirement to perform this test 24 hours before arrival in the UK. We were both negative, fortunately, although we are one of the very few that wear masks at all time that we are in public areas.
  • We only attended one lecture and that was a virtual tour of the bridge and ship by the Master = Captain Aseem Hashmi. He was very amusing giving us pointers as to the various instruments and parts of the ship – the 4 pods (two movable and 2 fixed) to which are affixed the propellers and each about the size of a double decker London bus. There is no rudder and all is managed through the movement of the pods and the bow thrusters – three openings in the front of the ship that have propellers pushing water from one side to the other depending on whether Port or Starboard movement is required. The 3 GPS units, the reason for the bridge painted green – keeps you alert; and the similarities and differences between a ship and his previous life as Captain of large Commercial Aircraft (British Airways 747). A few minutes after his talk he came over the loudspeaker with the usual daily noontime ship position, bearing, speed, conditions etc. and an amusing anecdote of the origin of common expressions. Always interesting and this was also the final change in one hour forward so that we would be on British Time.
  • After a light lunch Anne was off to the gym and Roger was able to get onto a zoom and finally post to the blog – Pictures to follow! The evening was formal “Roaring 20’s” gala evening and the show Apassionata which featured the on-board Singers and Dancers performing different dances.
